Are there different French verbs for "moving to" somewhere and "moving from" somewhere? I'm moving to France soon and I want to at least get that part right!
There’s a bunch but you really have to pay attention to the preposition following. I’m just gonna give you all the verbs about moving and stuff so you don’t mix things up :)
Déménager de : To move from
J’ai déménagé de Paris pour aller à Toulouse.
I moved from Paris to Toulouse.
Déménager à : To move to
J’ai déménagé à Toulouse car Paris coûte beaucoup trop cher.
I moved to Toulouse because Paris is way too expensive.
Emménager : To move in
J’ai emménagé avec ma fiancée.
I moved in with my fiancée.
J’ai emménagé dans mon appartement.
I moved in my flat.
This one is often mixed up with this one > , because they sound really similar.
Aménager : To arrange
J’ai aménagé mon appartement.
I arranged my flat.
Mixing Aménager and Emménager is a really common mistake so if you read “Aménager à Paris” or something like that, you’ll know it’s wrong ;)
Bonus vocabulary:
Un déménagement : Moving
Je ne pourrais pas vous appeler car je serai en plein déménagement.
I won’t be able to call you because I’ll be in the middle of moving.
Mon déménagement s’est bien passé.
The moving went well.
